Today was a good day.
Today the Pastry Arts students got their uniforms, but we didn't, which I am a bit bummed about.
Today we had our first Business Communications test/quiz.
Today I got my math assignment back: 100%.
Today I went for a drive with Tiffany, and dropped off 2 more resumes.
Today we went swimming, Tim, Tiffany, Sarah, Chris and I. We met up with a guy living off res, Luke.
Tonight we watched Hell's Kitchen in the common room, it is even better with Culinary Students commenting on it.

Post-Mocktails
Went to the mocktail party last night. It was nice to see more people out and about as usual, but from what I heard and who I met, it wasn't residence students.
Talking to our security guard led me to find out that there were more than 50 people signed in as guests!
I eventually left the party to go watch Superbad with friends in the common room.

Pre-Mocktails
Tonight there is a dorm wide party.
It is a stoplight mocktail party.
For those of you who do not know what a stoplight party is, it is essentially a dating game. Everyone who attends the party wears a colour.
Green - Single
Yellow - It's Complicated
Red - Taken/In a Relationship
Our events students are providing the mocktails, and we provide the fun.
As one event guy put it: "We're basically providing you guys with mix"
I'm just looking forward to see everyone, as some students have still been hiding out in their rooms, not meeting up much. I seem to be running into the same people, over and over, in the halls.
Post-Mocktail blog to follow.

Knives and Jobs
I got my knives on Friday!
I also learned how to tie my necktie, got it right on the first try. I was very pleased to see that it wasn'T as complicated as everyone made it out to be.
I tried out my knives last night, cut up some potatoes. It is a 9 piece knife set, and just the chef's knife alone is worth $125. It is a Wüsthof knife set, good ol' strong German steel.
Today I went dropping off more resumes with a friend of mine, Scott. I found a place who is hiring a line cook, which would like rather nice on my resume. I gave them a copy of my current resume and I am to call them back when the owner is in the building.
We walked for quite a bit, as the weather is really nice today. Charlottetown has a lot of really nice areas.

FirstAid
My first few days have been spent in First Aid/CPR/WHMIS, in fact it is not all over yet, I still have tomorrow to do, but it is only a half day.
The first month or so of classes will be mind numbing, full of theory classes and common sense stuff (if you're bleeding, stop it).
I walk to school with some friends, they are in culinary, but not in my group/class, they are all first years. We all live in res so we head on down together.
Lunch is delicious, sometimes. As part of our course it is "our duty" to eat at the cafeteria once a day. We get "duty cards" which are basically a punch pass. I'm trying to introduce small amounts of meat into my system with little to no success. I either end up running to the bathroom, or feeling droopy and slow the rest of the day. So I just pick around it, and stick to "tasting" the meat and not actually consuming large portions of it. (Or a small portion.) It's good, the deserts don't impress me much, we had a carrot cake yesterday that was horrible and dry. Everyone took one bite and left it. We're talking of starving college students here, so it had to have been pretty bad. Though we do get to taste test, since we have Canada's Smartest kitchen, which is a tester kitchen where big companies like Cavendish come in and try out their new products on us, the little people (aka the starving students).
So far I have had no studying needed, as FirstAid is common sense, and the test is a practical one. Today we were given scenarios and told to use our heads, we had a guy who had fallen off of his work ladder, no helmet and was bleeding severely from his lower thigh and had a deformed upper arm. First we had restrained his arm using a sling around the neck, but then we were told that if he had fallen and harmed his neck (always assume the worse) we would be putting unwanted pressure on the spine.
Since he also had cuts and scrapes on his forehead, we tied his upper arm to his head, using the sling as a bandage as well. Saving ourselves precious bandages to put under his neck and to stop his thigh from bleeding.
Our knives and whites should be showing up by the end I'm pretty excited to see how snazzy I look dressed up :)
Photo will be uploaded when it happens :D

Snow Cones
Last night was a very good night.
My room-mate went out clubbing with a few friends, and most of residence followed suit. So there were only a few of us left wandering around the halls.
I met up with a friend, planning on learning how to better my pool skills, but since the pool table was being used we went upstairs and played air hockey. Eventually we ran into other people and this led to a snow cone quest.
You see this girl has a snow cone machine, and needed ice cubes, since I was hyper and wanted a walking adventure I decided to go with her, so the 3 of us walked to the gas station and picked up a bag of ice.
We got back and made delicious snow cones, I had an orange one, a blue raspberry one, and a mix of them both. As well as a coconut rum experiment (the experiment was a success)
We then came across some other friend playing Mario Party in one of the common rooms, watched them for a bit. We weren't tired yet, so we picked out a movie.
It was Watchmen, which I had not seen yet. It was absolutely amazing! Then we picked out 21, but I left before the end of that, as I was crazy tired.

Security Guard
I met our security guard last night - no worries, I just bumped into him in the hall, he was not after me. He is a very nice guy, his name is Hayden, he loves his job and is good at it.
He is friendly and polite. A couple of us walked outside to get some fresh air and forgot we had our drinks with us, and he gave us a friendly reminder to not take them outside.
We talked with him for a few minutes, and then he heard some rowdy kids and went off to calm them down. Quiet hour is 2am on weekends here, and he enforces that. At 1:45am he comes around and tells us to mosey on home and get ourselves in bed. He is like a gentle father, I feel like he is watching out for us, and not so much protecting us.
Here's to the man who keeps us safe!

First Day
Today was sort of my first day.
We went to the cafeteria and heard of everything that makes up our program. I found some friends and will actually be heading up to their floor later on tonight.
Got a walk around of Canada's Smartest Kitchen and then came home and made some diner. Cereal, Eggs and an apple :) I actually seem to be eating pretty healthy!

School Books
I have my school books now and my Student ID!
The books weigh a ton, but are included in my tuition fees so I didn't have to hand over the money, which makes them seems cheaper.
-Welcome to Culinary School: A Culinary Student Survival Guide
-On Cooking: A Textbook of Culinary Fundamentals
-The Prentice Hall Dictionary of Culinary Arts
-Culinary Math
-Introduction to Information Technology
I also got fitted for my uniform (my "whites") which will be sent away to get my name on it :)
I am an extra small... no surprise there :/

Construction
Construction is good, it lets us keep our damage deposit.
The problem is we have no sink.
The problem with having no sink is that we are hungry.
The problem with being hungry is we only have pasta.
The problem with only having pasta is we have dirty pots.
So we decided to go to our neighbours room to clean our pot.
The pot was full of water so we dumped it into the toilet first, as we would have spilled it on the way to the other room.
Klink.
There was a spoon in there... which is now in our toilet.

Boredom
I can't believe I'm actually bored.
All my life my mother has told me that college life will always be hopping with things to do.
I think the problem here is that we all have our own rooms, so no one interacts since they can hide away.
I just want to go out and meet new people :(

Food Food Food
I am very surprised at my eating habits.
I was expecting to get here and have horrible eating habits, but I may even go as far as saying I have the best I ever have had!
Before my family left, they used their lovely vehicle to help carry groceries to my dorm. I have some frozen fruit and vanilla yoghurt. With my primitive cooking skills I have managed to figure out a way to fashion the two items into a drink of sorts. It has a lovely smooth texture, I believe I shall call this invention, the smoothie.
There are also these funny crunchy things that came in a package. I have used my cleverness to open this package up, and boil them over a heated surface. This technique makes the product soft and chewable, as well as giving it more flavour. It is delicious and fills me up. I don't know what to call this one. Pasta or posta, I'm not sure yet.
My cupboard has two big boxes of insta-meal. You pour it's contents into a bowl, add liquid, preferable of a dairy variety and it tastes wonderful! This is also a very filling meal that produces minimal dirty dishes. I am not sure of it's name.
And any calories I ended up missing out on that day, are quickly consumed once the sun goes down. Here in college they have a brown bubbly product. It has a light refreshing taste, and is horrible when warm. The weird thing is the twist off caps.

Meeting
Tonight we had a meeting for our floor. It was just a quick one to go over some rules and tips on how to have a good time in residence.
I was pretty excited for the meeting, because I wanted to meet some of my fellow floor mates. But I was very disappointed when they all left after the meeting was over. I was truly looking forward to making some new friends. I guess everyone is still a bit shy.

College Life
So far I haven't had much of a chance to experience "College Life". People are still moving in, not everyone is here yet and many people are still very shy. But that is not to say that I havn't been out there.
2 nights ago I went to a party with my roommate, it was our neighbours room and we sat around and had a few beers. It was a nice chance to get to meet people and I even got an invite out to Cora's the next morning, not too shabby.
I went to a party last night, but only got introduced to everyone before I found someone there who shared my taste in music. He was also going into the same program as myself, so we started talking.
The only issue I seem to be having from these nights, is the return time. I'm averaging a 3am bedtime, with a wakeup time of 11am. I don't see this working out once classes start.

Moving In
So I decided to do another blog, as I have had people tell me how much they enjoyed reading about my adventures in Germany. Well I figure I will have some pretty interesting adventures here in Culinary School as well!
Friday morning I got up and did some last minute running around, and by noon we were on the road. Gramp was driving while Mom was navigating and Gran, Dad and I were jammed into the back seat. The contents of my new room were piled in behind us, and I prayed Gramp never made a sudden stop.
My working hours finally caught up with me and I snoozed most of the way there, though it was not a far journey, to the bridge takes about an hour and from there to Charlottetown normally only take another hour. Unfortunatly Mom gave up her navigational role to take on being the driver, and this put Gramp in the passenger's seat. Note: Passenger's seat, not navigator's seat. Gramp took us on a 3 hour shortcut and we arrived to my residence around 5. Of course we checked into the hotel , and then went out for supper once all my stuff was in my room, left to unpack and organize later on that night.
I had corresponded with my roomate before I arrived, and when I showed up she was nowhere to be found. She is RLA which gives her a lot of work to do, especially on the move-in weekend. This wasn't a big deal, as it was nice to unpack in peace, and I took all night doing so.
When I woke up Saturday morning I was to call Mom and we were to meet up for breakfast at Cora's. Hurricane Earl had hit, but was really nothing more than some rain and high winds. Even so Gran wanted to hit the roads soon, so we made an early breakfast and picked up a few last minute groceries for myself before they crossed the bridge and left me stranded on an island.
